What is Mental Health?
Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental Health is important at every stage of life from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. Over the course of your life, if you experience mental health problems, your thinking, mood, and behavior could be affected. Many factors contribute to mental health problems, including:
- Biological factors, such as genes or brain chemistry
- Life experiences, such as trauma or abuse
- Family history of mental health problems
How to Identify Mental Health Disorders?
The initial screening and diagnosis of mental health or psychiatric disorder is often made by primary care physicians. A thorough evaluation by your primary care provider should always include mental health screening. Although there are many facets in the mental health profession, the access and recognition of need is limited by most patients, this is why the role of your primary doctor in identifying these needs are very important. Some of the treatments provided to patients may include :
- Group therapy
- Day treatment or partial hospital treatment
- Specific therapies, such as cognitive-behavior therapy and behavior modification.
